What do the numbers tell you?

In the 1000 series, the last two digits of the grade indicate the minimum aluminium content.  

– 1050 requires at least 99.5% aluminium  

– 1060 requires at least 99.6%  

– 1100 requires at least 99.0%  

So the purity ranking is: 1060 > 1050 > 1100. But higher purity is not always the better choice for your project.

Chemical composition – small differences, big impact

The three grades differ not only in purity, but also in how their impurity elements are controlled.

– 1050 – Al ≥99.5%, Si ≤0.25%, Fe ≤0.40%, Cu ≤0.05%. Strict impurity limits, suitable for applications that demand a clean alloy.

– 1060 – Al ≥99.6%, Si ≤0.25%, Fe ≤0.35%, Cu ≤0.05%. The highest purity and lowest total impurities among the three.

– 1100 – Al ≥99.0%, Si+Fe ≤0.95%, Cu allowed between 0.05% and 0.20%. This is the key difference: by allowing a small amount of copper, 1100 trades a little purity for better formability and strength.

In short: 1060 pursues purity; 1100 pursues practicality.

– Electrical conductivity – Many assume higher purity means higher conductivity. In fact, 1100’s copper content gives it the best conductivity among the three. For electrical applications, 1100 deserves serious consideration.

– Thermal conductivity – 1060 performs exceptionally well in heat dissipation, making it a top choice for heat exchangers and cooling components.

– Corrosion resistance – All three belong to the 1000 series, which offers the best corrosion resistance of any aluminium alloy family. Among them, 1060 has a slight edge due to its higher purity.

– Formability and weldability – 1100 stands out with the best ductility and formability, and it is widely recognised as one of the most weldable aluminium alloys. If your parts involve deep drawing, spinning, or complex welding, 1100 is the clear frontrunner.

Which grade fits your application?

– 1050 – Often used in chemical equipment, food industry vessels, sheet metal work, welded parts, heat exchangers, lighting reflectors, kitchenware, and decorative items. It offers a balanced mix of corrosion resistance and workability without requiring high strength.

– 1060 – Commonly found in aluminium foil (gaskets, capacitors), cable sheathing, wire cores, heat sinks, heat exchangers, chemical instruments, deep‑drawn or spun vessels, nameplates, and reflective devices. Choose 1060 when thermal or electrical conductivity is a priority, or when the environment demands maximum corrosion resistance.

– 1100 – Typical applications include heat sinks, chemical and food processing equipment, storage tanks, cookware, heat exchanger components, deep‑drawn products, sheet metal fabrications, welded assemblies, printing plates, signage, and architectural trim. Go with 1100 if your design involves complex forming or high‑quality welding.

How to decide? Ask yourself these three questions

1. Does your part require complex forming or high‑quality welding?  

   → If yes, prioritise 1100.

2. Is electrical or thermal conductivity a critical factor?  

   → If yes, consider 1060 (best thermal) or 1100 (best electrical).

3. Do you have a strict purity requirement and a sufficient budget?  

   → If yes, 1050 or 1060 are your options. If you value cost‑effectiveness and processing convenience, 1100 is often the smarter choice.
